engagement rate — The engagement rate is a marketing metric that quantifies the level of active interaction an audience has with a hotel's content across digital channels. It encompasses likes, comments, shares, saves, clicks, video views, email open rates and other forms of measurable participation. In hospitality, engagement rate serves as a leading indicator of content relevance, brand affinity and, ultimately, commercial intent.

Engagement Rate Explained

Follower counts and page views are vanity metrics, they measure potential reach but reveal nothing about whether anyone actually pays attention. Engagement rate fills that gap. It answers the question: of the people who saw or received our content, how many interacted with it in a meaningful way? For hotels, where brand perception and emotional connection heavily influence booking decisions, engagement is a far more valuable signal than raw reach.

The metric applies across every digital touchpoint. On social media (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube), engagement includes likes, comments, shares, saves and video watch time. In email marketing, engagement is measured through open rates, click-through rates and reply rates. On the hotel website, engagement manifests as time on page, scroll depth, interaction with galleries or virtual tours and progression through the booking funnel. Each channel has its own calculation conventions, but the core idea remains the same: active audience participation relative to exposure.

For hospitality marketers, engagement rate is both a diagnostic tool and a strategic compass. A declining engagement rate signals that content is losing relevance or that the audience composition has shifted. A rising rate indicates that the content strategy resonates. Over time, properties with consistently high engagement rates build communities of potential guests who are primed to convert when the timing is right, whether they see a seasonal offer, a last-minute deal or a retargeting advertisement.

How Engagement Rate Works

Engagement Rate (%) = (Total Engagements ÷ Total Impressions or Followers) × 100

Social Media Engagement

On social-media platforms, engagement rate is most commonly calculated as total engagements (likes + comments + shares + saves) divided by either total impressions (reach-based) or total followers (follower-based). The reach-based calculation is generally more accurate because it accounts for the actual number of people who saw the content. However, follower-based calculation allows for easier benchmarking across properties with different audience sizes. Instagram and Facebook provide native engagement metrics in their analytics dashboards; third-party tools like Sprout Social, Hootsuite or Later aggregate data across platforms.

Email Engagement

In email marketing, engagement is measured through several layered metrics. The open rate shows how many recipients opened the email, though privacy features like Apple Mail Privacy Protection have made this metric less reliable. The click-through rate (CTR) measures how many recipients clicked a link within the email. The click-to-open rate (CTOR) isolates the effectiveness of the email’s content by dividing clicks by opens. For hotels, a well-segmented pre-arrival email might achieve a 60 per cent open rate and a 15 per cent CTR, while a general newsletter typically sees 20–25 per cent opens and 2–4 per cent clicks.

Website Engagement

Website engagement metrics help the hotel understand how visitors interact with the digital sales platform. Average session duration, pages per session, scroll depth and interaction with specific elements (photo galleries, map embeds, booking-engine opens) all contribute to the engagement picture. Google Analytics and similar platforms track these behaviours. A visitor who spends four minutes on the website, views three room-type pages and opens the booking engine is far more engaged, and more likely to convert, than one who bounces after eight seconds.

Connecting Engagement to Revenue

Engagement is a leading indicator, not a revenue metric in itself. The commercial value of engagement lies in its correlation with downstream conversion. Highly engaged social-media followers are more likely to visit the website. Subscribers who open and click emails are more likely to book directly. The bridge between engagement and revenue is built through attribution modelling, UTM tracking and CRM integration, which allow the marketing team to trace a guest’s journey from a liked Instagram post to a confirmed reservation.

Practical Example

In practice, this concept only creates measurable value when your hotel links it to clear operating routines, owner-level KPIs and a realistic implementation roadmap. Define one concrete use case, measure baseline performance, roll out in short cycles, and review results monthly with Revenue, Commercial, Operations and Tech in one steering rhythm.

In practice

Scenario

A coastal boutique hotel in Cornwall posts twelve times per month on Instagram to an audience of 14,000 followers. The average engagement rate is 1.1 per cent, and only two posts per month include a link to the hotel website.

Actions

The marketing manager restructures the content calendar: six posts feature high-quality reels of the property and surroundings (engagement drivers), three posts highlight guest experiences and user-generated content (social proof), and three posts include booking-related calls to action with tracked links. Your team replies to every comment within two hours and uses Instagram Stories with polls and question stickers three times per week. Hashtag strategy is refined to target regional travel searches.

Result

Over four months, the engagement rate rises to 3.4 per cent. Link clicks from Instagram to the hotel website increase by 185 per cent. The booking engine records a 22 per cent uplift in sessions originating from social media. Two user-generated reels are repurposed as paid advertisements, delivering a return on ad spend of 8:1.

Relevance for hotel operations

  • Marketing & Communications

Engagement rate is the primary performance indicator for content strategy; it guides what to create, when to post and which platforms to prioritise.

  • Revenue Management

Engagement-driven traffic to the direct booking channel reduces reliance on OTAs and improves net revenue per booking.

  • Guest Relations

Engagement on review platforms and social media shapes online reputation; responding to comments and reviews is both a service and a marketing activity.

  • Sales

LinkedIn engagement with B2B content (meeting facilities, corporate rates) supports group and corporate lead generation.

  • General Management

Tracking engagement trends helps leadership understand brand health and the effectiveness of marketing investment over time.

Common mistakes & best practices

Common mistakes

  • Chasing follower count over engagement: Buying followers or running generic giveaways inflates the audience with people who will never book, diluting the engagement rate and making content performance harder to assess.
  • Posting without a strategy: Random, inconsistent posting leads to algorithm penalties on social platforms and trains the audience to ignore the hotel's content.
  • Ignoring negative engagement: Complaints, critical comments and poor review responses are also engagement, handling them poorly can damage the brand far more than silence.

Best practices

  • Create content that invites interaction: Use questions, polls, "tag a friend" prompts and carousel formats that encourage the audience to participate rather than passively scroll.
  • Respond to every comment and message: Active community management signals to both the audience and the platform algorithm that the account is engaged, boosting visibility.
  • Segment and personalise email campaigns: Sending relevant content to defined audience segments (past guests, newsletter subscribers, loyalty members) dramatically improves open and click rates.

Frequently asked questions

What you should know about this term.

Benchmarks vary by platform and audience size. On Instagram, a hotel engagement rate of 1.5–3.5 per cent is considered solid, with boutique and luxury properties often achieving higher rates thanks to visually rich content. On Facebook, 0.5–1.5 per cent is typical. On LinkedIn, 2–4 per cent is a strong result for hospitality B2B content. Smaller, highly engaged audiences almost always outperform large, passive followings.

Hotels can improve engagement by posting authentic, visually compelling content that tells stories rather than just promoting offers. Using interactive formats (polls, questions, carousels, reels), responding promptly to comments and messages, featuring user-generated content, posting at optimal times for the target audience and maintaining a consistent brand voice all contribute to higher engagement rates.
